I have been blessed to share my life with so many amazing animals. The hardest thing in loving them so much is when we experience the devastating loss of them throughout our lives.

One of my aims for Zali & Co is to be able to not only share losses and grief with other pet parents but also allow this to be a place where people can honour and celebrate their dog’s lives.

Our tributes page will be a place where people can post a tribute to their loved one and we hope that this will help bring some comfort to pet parents. We look forward to learning about how special so many beautiful dogs are to their families.

To all the beautiful creatures who have enriched my world and who have sadly passed - Roger, Cam, Blackie, Tiffany, Patch, Steffie, Demo, Maddi, Gianni, Amy & Ree. I wouldn’t be the person that I am today without you. You have truly all been an inspiration to me.

A poem called “The Dash” reminds me of my dearly loved animals and how they live their lives. Their life spans aren’t what we so wish they could be but look what they fit into their lives and look what we’ve been so grateful to be able to share with them. Look at the smile they always had/have on their faces no matter what and the smile they brought/bring to yours. That is something so special that will forever be in our hearts.

The Dash

Linda Ellis (by permission)

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend

He referred to the dates on their tombstone

From the beginning - to the end.

He noted that first was their date of birth

And spoke the following date with tears,

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time

That she spent alive on earth,

And now only those who loved them,

Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own

The cars, the house, the cash,

What matters is how we live and love

And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard

Are there things you’d like to change?

For you never know how much time is left

That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough

To consider what’s true and real,

And always try to understand

The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,

And show appreciation more

And love the people in our lives

Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect

And more often wear a smile

Remembering that this special dash

Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy’s being read

With your life’s actions to rehash,

Would you be proud of the things they say

About how you spent your dash?

It is important to live our lives to the fullest, open every door, experience every up and down. We all too often let our lives pass by then realise we are running out of time. It’s never too late, just get up, step out and go do it!
